Quality Assurance
– At GMA Industries

At GMA Industries, quality isn’t a checkbox — it’s built into every step of how we manufacture, handle, and deliver our abrasives. From the raw material we source to the bag that ships to your facility, our processes are designed to give you a product that performs consistently, reduces waste, and keeps your operation running efficiently. Whether you’re buying virgin or recycled abrasives, you’re getting material that’s been held to the same high standard.

Our On-Site
Quality Control Program

From Michigan to the United States

Every product that leaves our facility has been tested. Our Quality Control Manager operates an on-site testing laboratory in Metro Detroit where random samples are pulled and evaluated throughout the production process — not just at the end. This means issues are caught and corrected before they ever reach you.

Each batch is inspected to confirm it is free of contaminants, sized to your exact specifications, and properly packaged and labeled for accurate identification. Our team monitors every stage of production, so you receive a product that is clean, correctly graded, and ready to work.

Virgin Material:
Precision from the Start

When you purchase virgin abrasives from GMA Industries, you’re starting with material produced from certified, high-grade inputs and processed under controlled conditions. That starting point matters because it directly affects how consistently and efficiently the abrasive performs in your operation.

V-Blast Brown Fused Aluminum Oxide

This product is produced by fusing calcined bauxite, coke, and iron filings at 2,000°C, then reducing the mixture to eliminate unwanted oxides. Once cooled and solidified, the material is crushed and screened to meet strict industry specifications. Key qualities include:

  • Uniform hardness and grit size — consistent cut performance across every batch
  • Low oxide content — cleaner blasting with less surface contamination
  • Wide range of grit sizes — versatile across blasting, grinding, lapping, deburring, tumbling, and surface preparation applications
  • Certified crude sourcing — every batch starts from verified, high-quality raw material

Virgin Steel Shot and Steel Grit

These products, which are manufactured by Ervin Industries, undergo an equally controlled process to V-Blast Brown Fused Aluminum Oxide. Molten steel is atomized through high-pressure water jets, collected, dried, and screened by size before going through a proprietary quenching and tempering cycle. The benefits of that process include:

  • Precisely controlled microstructure and hardness — delivering a durable, long-lasting abrasive
  • Consistent particle shape — round shot for peening and cleaning, angular grit for aggressive surface profiling
  • Extended service life — fewer changeouts, less downtime, lower cost per blast cycle
  • Predictable surface profiles — less rework, fewer rejected parts, tighter quality control on your end

For businesses, that consistency translates directly to savings. Abrasives that perform uniformly require fewer adjustments, create less rework, and reduce equipment wear — lowering your overall cost per blast cycle.

Recycled
Abrasive Material:
Certified Clean, Ready to Perform

GMA Industries processes thousands of tons of recycled brown fused aluminum oxide and steel abrasives annually. Our recycled products are not simply sorted and rebagged — they go through a rigorous multi-step cleaning and reclamation process designed to restore them to a standard that competes with virgin material.

The process:

01.

Scalping

Large non-abrasive particles and debris are removed before further processing begins.

02.

Air Washing

The material is air-washed to separate and eliminate fine contaminants and dust.

03.

Rotary Kiln Furnace

Material passes through an open-flame rotary kiln, burning off residual coatings, oils, and organic contaminants.

04.

Rare-Earth Magnetic Separation

The cleaned material moves through rare-earth magnetic separators to remove ferrous particles and tramp metal. A second separator captures fines smaller than 90 mesh.

05.

Screening

The finished material is screened to meet industry specifications for size distribution, hardness, and chemistry — the same standards applied to our virgin products.

Each finished batch is tested in our on-site lab before it ships.

For buyers, the business case is straightforward. Abrasive material can represent up to 50% of blasting operating costs. Choosing a well-processed recycled abrasive that meets the same performance benchmarks as virgin material — at a lower cost per pound — directly reduces that expense. Our recycled products help you control material budgets without compromising surface preparation quality or increasing rework.

Why It Matters for
Your Business

The quality of your abrasive affects far more than surface finish. Every purchasing decision around blasting media has a downstream impact on your labor costs, equipment longevity, production throughput, and bottom line. Inconsistent or contaminated abrasives create a chain reaction of problems that cost more to fix than they would have to prevent.

Here’s what high-quality, properly processed abrasives mean for your operation:

Lower cost per blast cycle
Abrasives that are correctly sized, free of contaminants, and consistently hardened last longer and work more efficiently. You spend less per job without sacrificing results.
Reduced equipment wear and maintenance costs
Contaminated or improperly graded media puts unnecessary stress on blast wheels, nozzles, and reclaim systems. Clean, uniform abrasive protects your equipment and extends service intervals.
Fewer rejected parts and less rework
Inconsistent media produces inconsistent surface profiles. When your abrasive performs to spec every time, your surface prep results are repeatable — meaning fewer quality failures and less time spent correcting them.
Less downtime from media changeouts
When abrasive breaks down quickly or clogs reclaim systems with fines and debris, you lose production time. Properly processed media stays in service longer and keeps your line moving.
Tighter budget control
Abrasive material can represent up to 50% of blasting operating costs. Buying a product you can rely on — whether virgin or recycled — means you can forecast usage accurately and avoid emergency purchasing or overordering as a buffer against inconsistency.
Confidence in compliance and surface standards
Industries like aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and infrastructure have strict surface preparation requirements. Using abrasives that are tested, graded, and certified to industry specifications helps you meet those standards and document that you did.
At GMA Industries, our manufacturing and quality control processes exist so that by the time the product reaches your facility, it has already been held accountable. You’re not buying abrasives and hoping they meet spec — you’re buying from a manufacturer who has already verified that they do.
