Abrasive Recycling
– SMARTER, GREENER, AND COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS
Our innovative approach to abrasive recycling allows businesses to reduce waste, cut costs, and lessen their environmental footprint—all without sacrificing performance.
The Benefits of
Abrasive Recycling
Environmental Benefits of Abrasive Recycling
- Reduces landfill waste by up to 65–90%, diverting large volumes of material from disposal
- Lowers demand for virgin raw materials used in abrasive manufacturing
- Reduces energy consumption associated with mining, processing, and transportation
- Supports sustainability initiatives and long-term environmental responsibility
Life-cycle assessment research shows that recycled abrasive media can significantly lower overall environmental impact compared to virgin materials.
Cost Savings of
Recycled Abrasive Media
Recycling abrasive media helps businesses reduce operational costs by lowering material purchases and minimizing waste disposal expenses. Abrasives can account for a substantial portion of blasting costs, making recycling an effective cost-control strategy.
- Abrasive materials can represent up to 50% of blasting operating costs before recycling
- Reuse extends abrasive lifespan, reducing purchase frequency
- Decreases waste transportation and landfill disposal fees
- Helps stabilize long-term material and operating budgets
When combined with consistent recycled media performance, abrasive recycling delivers measurable savings across material, labor, and waste-handling costs.
Operational Efficiency Benefits of
Abrasive Recycling
Recycling abrasive media improves blasting efficiency by keeping clean, usable media in circulation longer and reducing downtime caused by frequent changeouts and cleanup.
- Reduces abrasive waste by up to 65–90%, allowing multiple reuse cycles
- Minimizes interruptions from material replacement and cleanup
- Maintains consistent surface preparation quality by removing fines and debris
- Reduces equipment wear and unplanned maintenance downtime
Cleaner, consistently graded recycled media helps blasting operations run faster, more predictably, and with greater overall efficiency.
The
Recycling
Process
Our recycling process involves several steps to ensure the highest quality:
01.
Scalping Process
Large non-abrasive particles are removed.
02.
Air Washing
Material is air washed to eliminate debris.
03.
Rotary Kiln Furnace
The material is heated and cleaned using an open flame, removing any residual contaminants.
04.
Magnetic Separation
The material passes through rare-earth magnetic separators, including a second separator for material finer than 90 mesh.
05.
Screening
After cleaning, the material is screened to meet industry specifications for size, characteristics, and chemistry.
Abrasive
Recycling Program
At GMA Industries, we’re proud to the industry expert by processing thousands of tons of BFA and steel abrasives annually from manufacturers across the U.S., and it’s all thanks to our commitment to quality and efficient production. We use precise, intricate quality measures to ensure you get the best out of our recycled materials. With us, recycling is more than just a process, it’s about helping you turn a negative cash flow into a positive one, all within our state-of-the-art facility.
Works
Our Abrasive Recycling Program is designed to make your life easier. We’ll handle your used aluminum oxide or steel grit abrasives, arrange pickup with freight costs included, and take care of all recycling aspects. As dedicated U.S. manufacturers, we ensure that our recycling process delivers high-quality products ready for reuse.
We’re always excited to work with new suppliers. Let us turn your waste into value and make recycling effortless for you!
Important Note: We do not accept hazardous materials. To ensure your abrasives are safe for recycling, we require a Toxicity Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP) report. If you don’t have a TCLP, simply submit a completed Non-Hazardous Material Statement prior to shipment.
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR
MATERIALS FOR RECYCLING
1. Collect one pound of your spent aluminum oxide or steel abrasive.
2. Label the sample with your company name, product type, size, quantity, and work area.
3. Send your sample to the following address for verification:
GMA Industries, Inc.
Attention: Lab Sample
38127 Ecorse Road
Romulus, MI 48174-1349
4.Once we verify that your material is non-hazardous and suitable for recycling, we’ll reach out with specific packaging instructions, paperwork requirements, and transportation details.
